CHAPTER 32

VICKS OPENED HIS eyes and found himself staring at an old man, who stood over him. The man was wearing a lab coat, and his teeth seemed too white.

Relieved, Vicks succeeded in moving his head after some effort. He felt a dull throbbing pain when he did so. ‘Where am I?’

‘In the hospital. But you are fine. My name is Doctor Mehra. I’m a neurosurgeon, Mr. Vicks. We have run all the routine tests on you, and everything is good. How do you feel?’

‘Thanks, I am feeling okay, I think.’ Vicks was able to move his head more freely now as he looked around the room. Two men in plain clothes and a nurse in a white uniform were also present in the room. All were standing. He tried to look more closely at them. The empty eyes of the men gave them away. They were the police, probably the ones who found him in that toilet.

‘Great! We will discharge you in a few hours, as soon as the sedatives exit your system,’ said the doctor. After a pause, he added, ‘Just remember to see a doctor if, in the next few months, you feel dizzy for no apparent reason.’

The doctor departed, and the nurse followed him out.

Vicks’ thoughts turned to the attack in the airport. How reckless of him, he thought. He had fucked up big time, forgotten the basics, and ignored the fact that keeping an eye in the rearview mirror was as much a part of an investigative reporter’s job as looking ahead. ‘Damn,’ he whispered, and his frustration increased the throbbing pain in his head.

But the enemy had been more patient. Vicks remembered the voice that had come from behind him in the airport manager’s office as he was foolishly looking out the window at the plane taking off. His adversary was so cool that he’d sounded almost sincere in his question. And before Vicks could recover from the surprise and protect himself, Jamie was all over him. The first one under the chin had dulled his reflexes, and after the blow in the solar plexus, he wasn’t able to breathe. Finally, when he was kicked in the side, he’d lost consciousness.

But he hadn’t died. The enemy had spared his life. Why? Probably so that once he woke up, he’d be forced to live with the frustration of his failure. Vicks closed his eyes again. He had no confidence left to face anyone. Not his boss, not the police. He just wanted to see Tonya. He would give up his stubbornness about being an investigative reporter. Perhaps he could study some more, as Tonya had said he should, and pick a decent white-collar job. The job of an investigative reporter had nearly gotten him killed. It was obviously not his cup of tea. He closed his eyes.

‘Son, how are you?’

The voice was familiar, and yet it made him uncomfortable. He opened his eyes slowly and saw his father, who must have come into the room while Vicks’ eyes were closed.
