After dinner, Esther helped Sophie pack Spam’s bag and basket up to her bedroom. Carrying her backpack full of books and Spam’s bag up two flights of stairs winded her. She stopped at the top for a moment and let Sophie go first. When they reached her bedroom, Sophie gently let Spam down. His nails marked every step as he pranced toward Esther’s double bed.

Then before Esther could stop Spam, he made a break for under her bed. She could hear Miss Molly warn him with a low meow and half growl. Spam yipped. She heard Molly hiss and then a painful yelp. Spam ran out from under her bed to Sophie, who dropped her load and caught him on the first leap. Molly’s growl let everyone in earshot know how she felt about sharing her private sanctuary.

“What are we going to do?” Sophie asked.

Laying on her belly, Esther tried to reach Molly, cooing, kissing, and begging in the dust bunnies. But Molly just turned her nose up. She was the one betrayed and was going to make sure Esther knew what she thought about Spam being in her room.

Esther heard a deep chuckle and looked over her shoulder at Nephi’s massive converse high tops. “You think you can do any better?”

“Come here, buddy. We men have to stick together.” Above her head, the bed bowed and threated to squish her. Molly passed her on a dead run, her nails skittering across the floor as she tried to turn and make it out of the door. Esther moved to the side and pushed her dusty body out from under the bed. She rolled over and flopped on her back next to the bed.

“I can’t move. Mrs. Stuart tried to kill us,” Esther said.

“I hear she is pretty good. Not as good as I am, but hey—not everyone can be me.” Nephi winked at Sophie.

“Thank heavens.” Esther rolled onto her stomach. “What are you doing up here?”

A rare cloud of emotion passed across Nephi’s usually sunny face. He frowned, and sighed, looking down. “For once I agree with Madison, one-hundred percent.” He looked up and stared intensely at Sophie. “I think, for some reason, someone wants you out of the way. You may not even know why. But two brushes with death in two days is two too many and it infuriates me.”

Sophie sat down hard on Esther’s rocking chair. Her mouth fell open. “You don’t think it’s just a coincidence?”

He scratched Spam behind his ears. “Not at all. Look, you heard Simon and Lars London talking. You told us in the garage. London wants to get rid of the library and maybe the whole building. He is always looking to make a buck. What if he killed Simon and thinks you saw him?”

“Maybe,” Sophie said. “But that doesn’t explain the donuts. Jax is a wild card. He made the donuts, and he’s new in town.”

“He doesn’t strike me as a killer,” Esther said, rubbing her neck.

“Whoa. What have we here?” Sophie snickered.
