By the last post came the letter from Cambridge.

Lanfranc College,

Cambridge.

My Dear Travers,

I think I can help you over the digging operations you mentioned. This was a hobby of the late Mr. Revere and consisted merely in the search for what might be called prehistoric kitchens. I was not interested myself but, as far as I recall Mr. Revere’s explanation, these consisted of clay-lined holes filled with water into which was dropped a stone previously made white hot. The heat thereby imparted to the water facilitated a boiling process—a method of cooking unknown by means of vessels as we know it to-day. The stones themselves appear to be highly prized by collectors.

The mistakes in this are due to my untrustworthy memory. I was concerned, as you may know, with the mathematical side of Mr. Reverey’s researches only.

Come and see me when you are in Cambridge. I regret that a severe cold kept me from the funeral, but I am relying on your good offices to let me have the editing of any of the papers which may be suitable for publication.

Yours sincerely,

HERBERT MERRITT.

As for the arguments which the letter would provoke, Travers deliberately avoided them. After all, things might have happened to Franklin that would make any argument unnecessary.
