2.2 Luminance Masking Factor (LM) Model

Human eyes show a band-pass property in the Luminance sensitivity. It reflects different sensitivity under different intensity of light. The HVS is known to be more insensitive in a dark or bright area than in the middle ranges of pixel intensities. Though the piecewise linear function of background luminance established in [6] is easy to calculate, different frequency coefficient using the same weighting is not desired in HVS. Model in [10] takes its frequency characteristics into account.
