MUD BRICKS

YOU'LL NEED

Dirt/mud (gather a variety of types to mix together)

Water

Dried grass, twigs, and/or straw

Buckets

Ice cube trays or egg cartons or plastic storage containers or cardboard milk cartons with the tops cut off (to make your brick molds)

Plastic wrap (optional)

Pick a sunny, warm day and an area you can get messy and then start making your mud bricks.

Remove any rocks from your soil.

Tear up leaves, twigs, or straw into small pieces.

Mix dirt and mud with the leaves, twigs, and/or straw and a little water until the mixture is thick, moist, and holds together, like thick pancake batter.

Put the mixture into the molds and pack the mud tightly. (If you are worried about the bricks sticking in the molds, line them with plastic wrap.)

Set the bricks somewhere warm and dry, preferably in the sun.

Allow at least two days for small bricks and five days for large bricks to dry.

Pop the bricks out of their molds.

You can use them now, but for best results allow them to dry another week in the sun out of their containers. (Or you can bake small bricks in the oven at 150 degrees for a few hours.)

To build your house, stack the bricks to make walls. Experiment with mud mixtures to use as cement to hold your bricks together.

Note: You can use just about anything for your brick molds: egg cartons, butter tubs, paper cups, small buckets, or cans. The bigger the mold, the longer you need to let your brick dry. If your bricks crumble easily, allow more drying time.
