CHAPTER -22-

Hunter

The matter was clear. My fate was to act like a complete idiot every time I was around Jane. My behavior just now had been beneath me. To cut Jane off like that when she was already having a hard time on the team. I should know better. Do better. But while I was able to maintain a halfway decent relationship with Anna without any problems, that seemed impossible with Jane.

The entire week she had avoided me. She had ignored me and had not let on with any look or gesture what had happened between us. Seeing her like that, I could only assume she’d forgotten about our intense kiss in the ladies’ room. And to make matters worse, she had sat down next to that greasy Kinkaid at the meeting. Even though I had specifically told her to stay away from him. She couldn’t possibly flout my authority any more than that. But if I was honest with myself, I hadn’t done much in the last two weeks to earn her respect. No matter what had happened back in Chicago, I was the COO of Denton and I was going to succeed my father. Never should I have allowed myself to be so tempted, to lose my cool like that. My father would be disappointed in me.

Propping my elbows on my desk, I eased my head into my hands and ran my fingers through my hair with my eyes closed. I felt drained and exhausted, yet I needed all my energy right now.

A knock on the door snapped me out of my thoughts. "Come in,“ I called tiredly. Jane entered the room. Suddenly I sat bolt upright in my chair. My heart pumped faster in my chest.

"Jane,“ I said in surprise, because I had been expecting everyone but her.

"Anna wasn’t there, so I just walked through,“ she said uncertainly, quietly closing the door behind her. She stood awkwardly in the room kneading her hands. I got up and approached her, but left enough distance between us. By now I knew that Jane’s proximity made me do stupid things.

"What are you doing here?“ I asked curiously. She was looking everywhere but at me. Sadness shadowed her features. Her blue eyes seemed darker than usual.

"I wanted to talk to you about earlier, at the meeting,“ she replied.

"I’m sorry,“ I hastily affirmed before she could continue. "I shouldn’t have acted that way, and it won’t happen again.“

"Oh,“ she gasped in surprise, looking at me. "Okay, thanks.“

We looked at each other awkwardly and no one said anything. Finally, it was Jane who broke the silence.

"That ... that’s pretty much it. I’ll be going then.“

As she turned her back on me, I wished I could say something to make her stay a moment longer. For the first time, the mood between us wasn’t potentially explosive.

"I also wanted to tell you,“ I began, noting with relief that Jane had returned, "that no matter what happened between us, nothing like today will ever happen again. Nor will any other incident.
