"Natty, is all that true?" My mother looked at me with wide eyes. Her round face had turned paler than I'd ever seen her and she was trembling.

"No, of course not!" I cried out. "Noah is a good man. He's being framed. It's all a set up, and I've got to help him."

My father was holding me with his strong arms, only this time it didn't feel like a bear hug, but an iron trap. As I flailed against him uselessly, I could hear the engine of Noah's Ferrari start up, and I knew I was seconds away from losing him forever. Once he drove away, Noah was sure to disappear, and there was no way anyone would ever be able to find him, including me. I stopped my senseless struggling and looked into my father's earnest eyes with my pleading ones. We each saw the same shade of emerald green looking back at us and our souls recognized that we were kindred spirits, a father and daughter made from the same blood and tears.

"Please let me go to him, Daddy. Trust me; I know Noah is innocent.”

I could see the gears of my father's mind cranking as he thought about all the potential consequences of his actions and the resulting fate to his youngest child. Then he breathed out a heavy sigh, opened his grip, and said, "I trust you, Natty. Bring my new son-in-law back home."

Everyone in my family began talking at once, voicing their opinions on the matter, but I wasn't there to hear them. I was out the door and running down the driveway. It looked like I was too late. Noah had put the car into gear and was starting to drive off. With unprecedented courage, I ran with all my might toward him, running out into the middle of the road and right into his path. Noah slammed on the brakes, stuck his head out of the window, and shouted at me angrily, "What the hell is wrong with you? You could have been killed."

"I can't let you leave like this," I said breathlessly. It had been years since I'd run track in school, and I was painfully out of breath from my exertions. "Come inside with me. My family knows that news story was full of lies and that the accusations against you are a set up. Let them help you. You're still my fiancé and that means you're part of the Phillips family now."

"Don't you see? That's why I have to leave. Your family is great and I already feel like a part of them, but they'd all be guilty of harboring a fugitive and aiding and abetting a criminal if I stayed. I can't put them in that kind of risk. I have to go."

"Okay, but you're taking me with you," I insisted. Noah scowled, and I was afraid he was going to refuse and drive away, but then I looked in his eyes and they were shimmering with gratitude.

He nodded his head and said, "Get in.
