It'd been over a week since Needlefoot and his small squadron left the Deuteron Ruins for Wasptail territory. After days of wandering and searching for signs of human settlement, they'd run into Wasptail hunters, including Mothmaw's old friend and former teacher, Commander Daggermouth.
"I didn't see them personally," Daggermouth replied when Needlefoot asked about the humans. "However, I heard odd reports about some humans passing through on foot."
Compared to the Rockshell soldiers, Daggermouth was enormous. The whole Elite could have easily fit on his flat, scaly back with room to spare, and his five stinger-tipped tails loomed over them like watchtowers, the stingers themselves each about half as long as Needlefoot's body.
"How many?" Needlefoot asked, flying a few feet from Daggermouth's face to maintain eye contact.
"Two."
"A male and a female?"
Daggermouth nodded. "Lucky guess, Marksman. From what I heard, the male was especially hostile."
"Not the female?" Spidercloak flew up next to Needlefoot, much to the marksman's surprise.
"The female was hostile, but she was subdued quickly. She set off one of the venom traps, but the male took her and killed several of our soldiers before we could harvest the meat. That was the official report I received."
Needlefoot froze. "The... The male killed the soldiers?" He knew Eron was a potential threat, but the ability to kill a group of Wasptail soldiersâand still manage to escapeâwas another level of "threat" entirely.
Daggermouth nodded. "And that's not all. What surprised us was that the only the female had weapons, but the male killed just as many as she did, even after we hit him with enough Venomspear arrows to easily kill a large prey-animal. The soldiers had to retreat, and while they did, the male grabbed the female and fled. If you'd like more information, I'm sure Deputy Clawscar has pleasant things to say about that encounter."
Needlefoot shook his head. He'd heard all he needed to know, and it was worse than he thought. "That won't be necessary. Do you remember which way they went?"
"To my knowledge, he carried her toward the Venomspear border," Daggermouth replied. "Why are you so interested in these two creatures, anyway?" The larger bug chuckled, "Unexpected survivors?"
"In a sense." There was no use explaining the whole story to Daggermouth, especially since the mere idea of Commander Mothmaw having been transformed into a massive prey-animal was absurd, with or without context. "Still, it's strange to know that the male was the most hostile..."
