Chamcha looked thoughtfully, cleared his throat, and whispered, “Then if I reveal myself in my current state- ”

“The Catholics will try to banish you with holy water, Spoono,” Gibreel responded and laughed, falling to the floor of the starlit highway while his companion’s mouth began to twitch and his eyes began to blaze.

Then, before I could finish the tour of my graveyard, the devil attacked the angel, stomping him with his cloven feet while yelling: “I’m sick and tired of your holier-than-thou attitude, you damn uncouth Indian!”

Well, I could not take anymore of the duo of divinity, and with a snap of my fingers, I removed us from the twilight-lit path and reappeared on the rocky shores of English Channel.

Chamcha looked up at me with questioning eyes while choking Gibreel, and though I was truly beginning to like this devil, I bowed and said, “Timshel,” and then vanished in the blink-of-a god’s eye.

A few moments later, I re-emerged from the shadows in Vienna and found my prey staring longingly at his young lover who pretended to be oblivious to his gaze. And while the screams of an angel reverberated through the dark pathways of my mind, I grabbed my prey and pulled him into my darkness.

“Religion,” I whispered and tore into my victim’s neck, easing my troubled thoughts with the rhythm of the German’s rapidly beating heart.
