5.

Mel waited for something else to happen, but nothing did. She had resigned herself to never knowing the truth about the deaths. She decided not to attend Darius’s funeral, she had barely known him after all.

One Saturday about three weeks after her chat with Helen, Mel was leaving to get a coffee when she ran into someone letting themselves into Julia’s apartment.

‘Um, hello, can I help you?’ Mel said, approaching the man standing in front of apartment 307.

‘I’m Tony, Julia’s nephew. The family has asked me to start sorting out her estate. And you are?’

‘Mel, I live in 304, obviously.’ Mel’s cheeks started to heat, of course she lived there, she’d just left it. ‘It’s nice you’re doing that for the family. Did you, uh, get a briefing on the state of things?’

Tony frowned. He was in his late forties, a little bit on the tubby side, with broad shoulders and a bulky frame, solid and strong. His button down blue and white checked shirt was straining a little around the tummy, perhaps put on a little weight recently. Below the shirt, he wore dark blue jeans and leather sandals reminiscent of a Roman gladiator with their multitude of straps. ‘The state of things?’

‘There’s umm, mud all over the interior.’

‘Mud? Why on earth is there mud? How do you know?’ His frown deepened.

‘I found her body.’ Mel swallowed; her mouth suddenly dry as the image of Julia’s body flashed through her mind.

‘I had no idea. I’m sorry you had to find her like that.’

There was a lengthy pause in which neither of them said anything more.

‘Do you think you’ll need a hand? I can help out a little,’ Mel said.

‘No, that’s probably not necessary.’ Tony waved his hand at the idea.

‘If you change your mind, I’m just across the way here.’ Mel paused. ‘I’m going for a coffee; do you want me to bring you anything back?’

‘I’m fine, really. It’s kind of you to offer. I’d better get cracking, especially if there’s cleaning that I wasn’t warned about that needs to be done first.’

‘I’m sorry for your loss. Julia was a lovely person.’

Tony looked down for a moment, before looking back to her. ‘She was.’

‘Have a good day.’

‘You too.’

Mel lingered as he pushed open the door and stepped into the empty apartment. The smell of wet, rotting earth had mostly dissipated and Mel was surprised to find herself relieved not to smell that again.
