Chapter 9

Meeting Your Match

Jamir

It’d been a week since their date, and Jamir was feeling a little disappointed that they hadn’t had a lot of time to spend together. It wasn’t like Emmy didn’t occasionally pop into the store for lunch, but Jamir was in that phase of a new relationship where he craved Emmy’s presence all the time. He was a bit disappointed that Emmy’s work schedule had picked up, but he understood that Emmy’s boss was riding his ass over an upcoming wrestling match.

Jamir couldn't help having the urge to kiss Emmy every time he saw him at the bookstore. Despite his desire to, it wasn't as if he could make out with Emmy in the middle of the bookstore.

The shop was mostly empty these days, except for a few regulars. Since many of the regulars had known him since he was a child, he didn't need them spreading his business all over the neighborhood. His Aunt Didi would demand he bring Emmy over, and their relationship was so new that he just wanted to keep Emmy all to himself.

Jamir would simply have to be content to sit next to Emmy and talk. They talked about their favorite books, tv shows, and movies. Huddled over cups of coffees and the beat-up Pride and Prejudice paperback Emmy always carried with him, they talked about their childhoods. Jamir told stories of Gena and Cedrick raising hell as kids, of his grandfather taking him to Houston Astros games.

Emmy also admitted that he went to the Olympics.

“Did you get a medal??” Jamir asked, leaning in eagerly. “Am I sitting at a table with a bonafide celebrity?”

Emmy rolled his eyes and muttered something about a bronze medal, his cheeks and ears flushing scarlet. **Aww, so cute, Jamir thought to himself, leaning so close that their mouths were inches apart.

The bell above the shop door rang, and Jamir noticed that the mailman had just left today’s mail. He’d been so focused on his phone that he hadn’t heard the guy come in. He trudged across the eerily quiet bookshop and picked up the mail.

He flipped through the envelopes, his fingers pausing on a letter from the mortgage company. Jamir had been so preoccupied with Emmy that he’d forgotten about his application.

His hands shook as he opened the envelope.

Dear Jamir Cunningham,

We appreciate your interest in our debt consolidation program and we thank you for going through the entire application process. Unfortunately, we have chosen to decline your application.

Jamir didn’t even bother to skim through all the reasons he wasn’t accepted. On autopilot, Jamir flipped the sign to “Closed: and made his way out of the shop and upstairs to his apartment.

Jamir took off his glasses and wiped away his tears. He put the letter on top of the foyer table and walked dejectedly to his sofa. Then he sat down and put his head in his hands.

What am I going to do?

Jamir didn’t know how long he sat there. his mind going round and round in circles.
