And she would have been dead. He was as good at the basic skills as he was at the planning. Barrett had often been more careless because he liked the thrill of the kill. Milo had tolerated it at times because he’d learned that it kept the subject more firmly under his control. But when he staged a finale for himself, he made sure that there was no encore.

So why not this time?

Because he was enjoying toying with Kendra Michaels, savoring how she would feel when he pulled the trigger? He had been terribly angry with Michaels when she’d wounded him with that nail gun and then stolen Tricia from him. He’d been watching her for two days and had become aware of the growing intimacy between the two women. It was clear they were taking comfort from each other’s company. He’d decided that it might be even more enjoyable to indulge himself during that splendid explosion that was to come if he let them both believe they were safe. But he’d only counted on hours, perhaps a day. Why had he let it drag on like this?

There was no way he’d admit that he’d made a mistake or allowed himself to soften. He wouldn’t have done that—even the thought offended him. It must only be as he’d first thought, that his instinct had been to just enjoy the Walton kill before he permitted himself to rid himself of Kendra Michaels. But now he was back on track…
