Teacher’s tips

As you will note from the example given, this is an activity which requires students to have a good amount of prior knowledge concerning the subject. As such, it is best used during the course of a unit of work or as the starter of the final lesson.

Make sure you give students at least two opportunities to debate, though try to do three if you can. Each time students engage in a debate, they rehearse the logical structure of arguments, as well as the best means by which to communicate them. As such, repeated debating leads to higher quality discourse and more refined thinking.

To support students who you feel might find the task difficult, display one argument for and one argument against the proposition on the board. These will act as starting points for students, helping them to get into the task and giving them a model which they can follow when coming up with their own arguments.
