Chapter Seven

Angling his head, Montana let his mouth seek hers, and after a heartbeat that had him wondering if he’d miscalculated their signals, he knew he’d worried needlessly. Sydney stepped more firmly into his embrace and looped her arms over his shoulders to thread her fingers through the hair at his nape. Quickly their kiss flared from a simple compliment to something else altogether.

Their breathing quickened in unison, lungs laboring, mouths moving, hands gripping. Greedily they moved, satisfying the curiosity that had burned between them since the day they met. Montana let his hands slide down the curve of her waist to rest at the gentle swell of her hips.

Kissing her like this gave way to the unwanted realization that Sydney had broken through the barriers he’d so meticulously erected. Somehow, he found himself beginning to feel alive again. To want a real relationship again. To trust again.

And it scared him as much as it excited him.

“What on earth,” he muttered against her mouth, “am I going to do with you now?”

“Kiss me some more?”

He did.

A moment later, he cupped her face in his hands and looked into her amazing green eyes. “And then what?” he whispered.

Not knowing the answer, either for now or for the future, made his question almost rhetorical. Their noses still touched and he could feel her sweet, minty breath coming in labored puffs that tickled his lips.

“I don’t know.” She tugged at the back of his neck, bringing his mouth back to hers, and again he was lost in the incredible sweetness he found there.

Behind them, someone loudly cleared his throat.

They both jumped guiltily at the sound.

“Well, one thing is for certain,” Tex drawled through the screen door. “It’s a lucky thing that I decided to come home first. From outside you can see in here plain as day. And unless you know the whole story, it looks pretty damn weird.”

“When are the rest of ’em coming home?” Montana asked, not bothering to hide his irritation at being interrupted.

“They’re a few minutes behind me. Should be swinging in here any time now. The old Rodeo House just wasn’t as interesting without Syd there to find dates for.” Tex leaned against the door frame, as if he had all the time in the world. “Though anyone can plainly see that we can all stop worrying about Syd’s love life.” He laughed and made no move to leave.

“Don’t you have something better that you could be doing?”

“No. Not really. Is that coffee I smell?”

“Yes,” Sydney answered, loosening her hold on Montana’s neck and taking a step back. “But it’s decaf. Want a cup?”

Montana stared down at her. What was she thinking? The last thing they needed at the moment was his lug of a brother settling in for a coffee klatch.

She looked up at him and shrugged. “We owe him,” she whispered. “Besides, I’ve gotta go put some more clothes on before the guys get home.”

Montana closed his eyes and sighed. Much as he hated to admit it, she was right.
