CHAPTER TWENTY

LAKE

I walk up and give Declan’s face a good morning smack.

“What the hell was that for?” he growls.

“Because hearing your growly voice wakes me up and I was feeling super tired,” I say.

“You guys have a cute relationship,” Emma says, which just makes me smile as I grab her and ruffle her hair. She doesn’t seem overly pleased, which is odd when I’m showering her with affection.

“Declan, our pet is so adorable. I just love her. Why did you tell me I could eat her that night at the bar?”

Emma’s eyes narrow as she looks over at Declan. “Excuse me, what?”

“He’s lying. Would you really believe a face like that?” he asks as he points to my face, and the damn pet believes him instead of me! It’s clear by the way she looks at me.

“Declan, how dare you?” I whisper.

Declan is pleased as he sits down on the edge of the bed. I sigh but pull out the pad of paper Emma found for us. She’s like a little retriever dog, scurrying off to get anything we need while also doing her super-secret spy stuff.

“You know they’re going to be hunting us down, right?” Declan asks.

“Of course. They’re expecting us to run from them, but my dear Declan, we do not run. We fuck shit up.”

He nods. “I’ll have my guns and you’ll have your fish. Match made in heaven.”

I smile at him. “We really are.”

“Not us, you and your fish.”

“We are too. The four of us are perfect together,” I realize.

Emma and Declan oddly lock eyes with each other, obviously agreeing that we are a majestic group.

“We’re going to pick them apart piece by piece and tear them down until there is absolutely nothing left,” I say, quite pleased with this idea.

“Now you’re speaking my language,” Declan says with a grin.

Of course destruction is Declan’s love language. It just makes him even more gorgeous. How can a man be so perfect?

“Why are you staring at me like that?” Declan asks.

“I’m just admiring your beauty,” I say.

“Please admire it less,” he says as he picks up a pen. “Now start from the top. You mentioned a Mona, Sy, and Basil. Tell me everything about them.”

I stare at him for a long moment as I consider this because I won’t just be telling the hunter about my family, I’ll be telling him about myself. Well… somewhat. He can draw his own conclusions about who I am.

“I think your beauty broke him,” Emma says, which makes Declan’s scowl deepen, as if he doesn’t love it.

“Can we please stay on task?” he asks.

“Basil is older than me. He relies fully on brute strength and rage. Or maybe he’s just super ragey around me—I oddly seem to have that effect on people.”

“Oddly,” Declan says.

“See, you get it,” I say, even though I’m positive he was being sarcastic. “You saw his true form. He’s much more canine in nature but if you get hit by him, it’s like being hit by a truck.
