The ride back didn’t seem to take as long, with the exception of having to go slow near the White House ruins. The number of tourists had already doubled, and it wasn’t yet noon. Lacey could see how the enterprising Navajos could make decent money ferrying the tourists in and out of the canyon.

Back at the visitor’s center, Reuben parked next to their truck and they all stood around the Jeep. Sam pulled out his wallet. “What do we owe you?” he asked.

“Nothing,” Reuben said. “Just find those crazy mother…” He glanced at Lacey. “Crazy assholes.”

“How about gas money?” Sam asked. He pulled out a twenty.

Reuben eyed it, hesitated, then took it. “Okay. Thanks. Appreciate it, man.”

“One last thing,” Sam said. “Do you by any chance remember what day you first saw the lights?”

Reuben thought back, then nodded. “Actually I do. It was September 29th. That’s my grandmother’s birthday, and we were joking about how someone was celebrating down in the canyon. Little did we know.”

“Okay, great,” Sam said, sticking out his hand. “Thanks, Reuben. You’ve been a big help.”

Reuben shook the offered hand and grinned. “Never thought I’d be getting into this stuff when I came to check on you.” He nodded to Lacey and Ben. “Stay safe.”
