Aside 1

And so the world moves.

In the early hours of the morning when the sun’s light was only beginning to leak across the sky, in the northeastern corner of the forest, right along Viridia’s border, the forest was stirring. A humanoid man was running through the forest for dear life. His mouth tasted of iron, and his vision out of his left eye had blurred. All that remained of his armor were the little metal scraps protecting his shoulders and thighs. Otherwise, he was merely a white-haired man with equally white skin wearing a white shirt decorated with blood splatters and stained brown trousers.

The man broke through the tree line and into a spacious clearing, but he did not stop to take in the scenery. He ran so quickly, so single-mindedly, that he stumbled—the fatigue in his legs had caught up to him—but he did not fall. He recovered and used the forward momentum to add a few more inches to his stride. But all the increments amounted to nothing.

“Guh!”

A searing pain came from the man’s knee. He fell forward, stealing a glance at the pain’s origin. A sharp red point had poked out through his kneecap and trouser, only to recede out of his leg a split second after. The man fell forward, his mind cursing his own lack of speed.

On the ground, he did not give up and instead crawled.

“That’s good. I like that.”

A chilling voice; the man’s mind screamed to stop, but his body desperately dragged itself away.

The world was quiets apart from the newcomer’s footsteps. Every step provoking a deep burst of fear, every step causing the heart to skip a beat.

The attacker approached and stood at the man’s feet. Clad in white, with a chest banner adorned with a bright red heart and a red helm with a head piece fashioned after a heart, all that was uncovered were his eyes, nostrils and mouth. Red, metal boots and gauntlets to match, this was the assailant who had pursued the man for the last few hours through foreign woods. In his grip, a sharp red blade that narrowed to a point at the tip was swung around as if the man was loosening his swinging arm.

The only sounds the man on the ground made were those of a body being dragged until he screamed.

“GAH!”

The red sword had extended and pierced the man’s other leg.

“Come on, come on, aren’t you going to try to run again? I’m going to riddle you with holes otherwise.”

The man said nothing, only clenching his teeth. In response, the assailant had a sadistic grin sweep his face; he enjoyed this, even if it was easier. He raised his sword; the arms would be next.

“Hold it.”

Another voice came, catching both the man and his chaser off guard.

A figure walked out from the tree line before the two. “Sorry, friend,” she said, “I’m cutting in.”

She was of fit constitution, this woman who confidently strode out.

Of two skin tones, dark gray and black—the boundary between them so crisp and defined that one would think she was being swallowed by static flames.
