Chapter 12

Ace

It was more than a damned miracle that the morning briefing went as long and as smoothly as it did. On more than one occasion, the Professor would get antsy in his seat and suggest someone summon Samson for his take on the night prior’s performances or to see if he had anything else to add. Neptune each time insisted that the girl was quite ill after a night of dancing on the effects of the fae herbs and that Samson had already caught them up on anything he might have wanted to add.

“He insisted everything went quite as planned, and the girl—Ember—she looked great on stage, and the crowd was perfectly siphoned,” Neptune insisted, doing his best to keep himself from sounding overly confident. If he tried too hard, it might spark doubt in the mind of the Professor.

Marek barely said a word, looking like he was a thousand miles away, off on his own planet. The orc had been visibly different since he’d retrieved the girl and brought her to Neptune’s tent. Softer, almost, as if the brief interaction with her had disrupted everything he knew about being a cold, distant beast.

Ace struggled to keep calm and still, knowing full well that just on the other side of the carnival grounds, Samson and Ember were tackling their half of the plan. There was a mighty possibility that by this time, Ember had already ridden the carousel, hopefully chock full of the information they needed. His insides churned, and the tent felt two sizes too small. He just wanted to get out of there, wanted to see her. He didn’t want to admit it to himself, especially knowing how Samson and possibly Marek felt about the girl, but he worried about Ember. More than he wanted information, he wanted confirmation that the oracle hadn’t given her any trouble.

Once the briefing had ended, the three cadre members couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

“My friend, if you do not find your zen, you will draw unnecessary attention,” Neptune cooed into Ace’s ear.

“Right.” Ace sighed, slowing his pace to a leisurely strut. “Also, we never did make a plan as to where to meet afterward…”

The satyr drummed his fingers on his chin nervously, eyes darting around as they passed Ember’s tent. The morning crowd had begun to make their way to breakfast, bodies all moving in one direction like river rapids, bumping into one another. The mass migration was common. Meals in the carnival were something that were better eaten fresh and hot.

“You really think it’s that hard to guess where they might be?” Neptune asked sarcastically as he gave one of Ace’s horns a playful tug. “Use that puny little brain of yours and think.”

“And if they’re not at breakfast?” Ace asked sharply. Until his eyes were firmly placed on the girl, he could not and would not be convincing himself that things were fine.

“Oh, there’s not a chance we’d miss breakfast,” Samson’s voice boomed over Ace’s as he caught up to the trio.
