Weber's reference to ‘planfully’ here is worth noting, and will be explored in more detail later. However, given the present context it is clear that Weber's account of instrumentally rational action differs significantly from the rational choice theory that underpins much of contemporary economic theorising. This issue again concerns the difference between economic and sociological investigations, as Weber is fully aware that economic investigations assume ‘strictly rational’ behaviour. Can it be concluded that Weber's account of instrumentally rational action is thus not a form of rational choice theory as such? The matter is not that simple, as Elster's comment indicates:

The approach taken in modern economics and decision theory … is resolutely subjective. Rational behaviour is not behaviour that is objectively optimal or adaptive, but behaviour that is optimal from the point of view of the agent.
