Gordon returned to The Cookie Cutter to find Rudy wandering the upper deck. “What are you doing here?”

“Clarice wanted to spend some girl time with her mother, so I thought it might be nice if we spent some time together too. You don’t mind, do you?”

“Not at all, but let’s go inside. It’s freezing out here.” Gordon headed for his private quarters. Rudy was a welcome distraction. He couldn’t get Evelyn out of his mind since he left her on the mansion’s doorstep.

Once inside Gordon took off his coat and handed it to Jervis. “Did you have a productive meeting, sir?” the butler asked.

“As productive as can be expected.” He glared accusingly at Rudy. Now that he thought of it, he wanted to know what possessed Dancer to set up the dinner the way he had. Since Dan and Rudy were thick as thieves, Rudy should have some information.

Rudy caught his father’s look. “What?”

Gordon sat in his favorite leather wing chair. “It was a lovely dinner. All that romantic candlelight. Your brother’s favorite chef cooking. The waiter, the wine …” His eyes narrowed. “… the tiramisu.”

Rudy’s eyebrows rose. “Wow, he hit you with the tiramisu?”

“What do you know about it?”

Rudy shrugged. “Not a lot. But is it any wonder?”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“Come on, Dad. We all saw how you looked at Evelyn when you kissed her under the mistletoe.”

Gordon rolled his eyes. “It was mistletoe.”

“What does that have to do with it? We could all see you enjoyed kissing her.”

Jervis entered the room. “Would you like a nightcap, sir?”

Gordon turned his narrowed gaze on the butler. “Fine.”

Jervis glanced nervously at Rudy, who shrugged again. “And you, sir?”

“I’ll have whatever my father’s having.”

Jervis sighed. “Very well, sir.” He left the room to go mix Gordon’s usual pre-bedtime drink.

“What’s he making anyway?” Rudy asked out of curiosity.

Gordon looked at his son then let his eyes wander the room. “Lorelei’s hot chocolate recipe.”

“Oh.” Rudy sat in the other wing chair. “Dad?”

“Mm?”

“Do you ever … think about being with anyone else?”

Gordon rubbed his chin. “That is not a subject I’ll discuss with my kid.”

Rudy grumbled something unclear. Gordon wanted to ignore it, because he knew where his son was going. And so he did. “Clarice is the best thing that ever happened to me. And I can’t help but want you to have the same kind of happiness.”

Gordon looked at the ceiling. “And at this very moment Clarice is giving Evelyn the same little speech, isn’t she?” He gave his son a pointed look.

“I have no idea what she’s saying – I’m simply stating how I feel.”

“Mm-hm. And you feel I need to chase women?”

“No, Dad, that’s not what I’m saying.”

“Oh, so it’s Evelyn Reese you want me to chase?”

“Dad, I just think that you need to …” Rudy made a circular motion with his hand. “… you know, put yourself out there. You’ve been alone too long. Doesn’t seeing all of us engaged make you think about doing it yourself?”

Gordon’s eyes widened.
