Chapter Twenty

OLIVER AND I spent the majority of the weekend in my apartment or, more precisely, in my bed. When Sunday night rolled around, he’d reluctantly gone home to sleep and change into clean clothes. Clothing had been optional for the duration of our extended sleepover.

On Monday morning I got to the Tisch building bright and early, intending to get an hour or two of darkroom time in before I had to be at a shoot. The building was empty and quiet. I loved it when it was like that. Peaceful. As much as I bitched about having to finish up the last few credits on my degree, I had to admit I’d miss this when it was over. It felt like home, and it had for the past six years.

The light in Oliver’s room surprised me. I figured maintenance must have turned it on, but I poked my head into the doorway anyway. Oliver reclined on one of the chairs, long legs propped on one another, head back, fast asleep. What the fuck? Had he spent the night here? Gotten in so early he’d already succumbed to a nap? Neither scenario seemed good, but I certainly didn’t mind the opportunity to study him as he slept. God, he’s beautiful. I had the overwhelming urge to smooth his hair back from his forehead and kiss that perfect, tempting mouth. As if he’d heard my thoughts, he stirred, startling a little when he saw me but quickly smiling.

“Hey.”

He stretched, arms reaching way above his head, muscles flexing, shirt rising just enough to show a strip of smooth stomach. My body reacted from head to toe.

“Hey, when did you get in?”

“I don’t know. I couldn’t deal with my roommate. What time is it?”

“Around seven. Did you sleep here?”

“Kind of.” He stretched again, cracking his neck.

“What did the devil woman do this time?”

“She acts like it’s her apartment and I’m an intruder. She and her boyfriend were having a huge argument when I got home, and she acted like I was interrupting them because I wanted to go to my room and get some sleep. I took a quick shower and got the fuck out of there.”

“That sucks. Housing can’t find you any alternative accommodations?”

“Doesn’t matter if they could. I paid her for the whole summer—that was the deal with her rental opening. I don’t have the money to pay another set of rent payments.”

“I’m sorry. That blows. You know, I’m hardly at my place most days lately. You’re welcome to hang there when you want to catch a nap or get some work done.”

“I don’t want to put you out.”

“How are you putting me out if I’m not even there? Seriously, dude. I don’t mind. And I’ve had shitty roommates, so I know what it’s like. Use my place. I’ll give you my key. I’ve got a spare at the apartment.”

“Wow. Uh, thanks.”

“Sure thing.”

He yawned, looking exhausted.

“I’ve got a couple of hours of shit to do here. Then I’ll be on a shoot the rest of the day.
