CHAPTER SIX

THREE sheets of paper.

Three men. Adrian, Paul and Roger. Their vital statistics, their hobbies and interests, and a short biography. All she had to do was pick up the phone and call one of them.

She grabbed the phone and called Thomas.

“I got it,” she said breathlessly as soon as he picked up the phone. She’d learned that there wasn’t any need to introduce herself, he always recognized her voice instantly.

“Good. You got it. Now, what exactly did you get?”

“The guys!” She cleared her throat, appalled at the way she sounded. Next she’d start giggling like a schoolgirl. “I mean—they found me some matches.” That was better. A calm and professional voice. “The agency. I have their information right here.”

“I see.”

“Can you come over after work? I’ll feed you, promise.”

“What do you need me for?”

“Work,” she said succinctly. “Or are you backing out on me?”

There was a silence that managed to scare her. Was he backing out on her? It wouldn’t be surprising. There was nothing really in this for him—except perhaps the friendship that had formed between them. Sure, she was paying him, but he wasn’t doing this for the money.

But thinking about it, she wasn’t sure she’d be doing this on her own. Having someone to talk to, someone to roll his eyes over her nerves, was reassuring.

“Sure. I’ll come over. Not sure what good I’m going to do, but I’ll be there. Do I get to cook again?”

“No. We’ll order pizza. How’s that?”

“Sounds good. I’ll try to be there by seven, okay?”

Thomas had memorized all three men’s vital statistics after Lea had read them to him six times. She couldn’t decide which one of them to contact first, and he refused to give his opinion and influence her choice. She wasn’t pleased.

“Okay, how about this: We each write down their names, in the order of preference, and then exchange notes.”

He shrugged. His stomach was beginning to gently remind him they’d been promised pizza. “Okay. Sure. But then you call the one you choose, okay?”

She was jotting down the name and didn’t answer. He wrote his own choice down, and she ripped it out of his hand as soon as he was done, tossing her own note on his chest. They’d chosen the same guy.

“Paul, huh?” she said. “He’s at the top of both of our lists. Why him?”

“His letter sounded like he was a down to earth, regular guy.”

“Good. I’ll call him.” She glanced toward the phone. “I guess I should do it now, or I might lose my nerve.”

Thomas stood up. “Great.” He bent down to kiss her cheek. “Good luck. I know you’ll charm him.”

When he turned around to leave he didn’t get far because she was hanging on to his sleeve. “Where do you think you’re going?” she asked indignantly.

“Into the kitchen to order pizza on my cell phone. I’m giving you privacy to chat with Paul.”

She moved her hand to his wrist and got a secure hold on him. “You’re not leaving me alone to face this.
