A more confounding woman he had never seen. Nolan watched Miss Faith Harper square her shoulders and head straight for an establishment that could be called questionable at best. He left the carriage door swinging open, which received a grunt from the driver, and reached out to snag her arm. Such an action was rather unbecoming of a gentleman, but he’d found it necessary with this peculiar lady on more than one occasion.

Faith looked down at where he held her arm, and a look of surprise widened her eyes only to be quickly followed by a downturn of her lips. “Why, sir, do you continually take hold of me in such a manner? I am given to understand that it is not the common way a gentleman escorts a lady.”

He withheld a retort about how this particular lady only wanted to be treated as a lady when it suited her. Apparently, their conversation in the carriage had not gained him as much insight into her mannerisms as he’d hoped. “Given your pace and trajectory, I sought to slow you before you entered.” He looked down to where he still held her and dropped his hand. “Forgive me.”

Faith brushed her hands down her skirt, sudden uncertainness entering her eyes. “I need to find Mercy.”

The statement didn’t seem in keeping with their current discussion on how a gentleman and lady were to interact, so it took him a moment to catch up with her capriciousness. He glanced up at the swinging sign depicting a pink bird with its head tilted back and wings spread wide. “I understand you are in a hurry to find your friend. But we cannot just dash inside. This is not the kind of place for a lady.”

She quirked an eyebrow. “Nor for a gentleman, if I’ve guessed correctly.”

Heat shot up his neck, and the vein under his collar pulsed. “It’s not a Christian establishment by any means, but I believe entering it will damage my reputation less than it will yours.” He tugged at the hem of his jacket. “Therefore, I should be the one to enter and make inquiries.”

Faith stared at him, and they found themselves at yet another impasse. This time, however, Nolan refused to budge. He set his feet, giving her the time she needed to come to her senses. There were fewer people on the walks here than there had been uptown, but the few who lingered gave them a wide berth—which Nolan took to be another bad sign. There was no way he was letting her go in there.

The salty sea air tugged at his hair and brought back sudden memories that he’d rather forget. He clenched his hands. Regardless of how unconventional this woman insisted on being, he would not let Mr. Harper’s daughter sully her reputation. He should never have let her out of the carriage.

The stubborn set to her jaw tried his patience. It took a hefty amount of willpower to keep his tone conciliatory. “You should wait in the carriage while I inquire inside.
