Chapter 6

S he’s not exhausted, I know when Evie’s lying. She didn’t all of a sudden get tired, she’s just bothered by the fact that her city boy left with Andrea. To be honest, I don’t know why it matters. It’s not like she was going to be doing anything with him. It’d be different if it wasn’t just some harmless flirting, she has no intention of actually acting on her desires.

Does she? Looking over at the longing written on her face, I’m beginning to think it may not be as harmless as I once thought. The fact that it’s affecting her this much, she’s letting her heart get involved. In this line of work, we can’t do that. You have to act empathetic, but you can’t actually care.

Watching her flirt with the other guys at the bar, it just comes so natural, but I can tell she’s not into it. She’s thinking about him and probably won’t stop until she’s in Andrea’s shoes. I get the appeal, I really do. It’s hot enough when some smokin’ chick from the city comes in, just passing through, but if she’s got a killer personality to match her bod, I couldn’t imagine.

Luckily for me, they’re essentially eye candy with piss poor attitudes. Sure, I’d fuck ’em, but that’s where it ends. The thing is, I know I don’t have a chance. They take one look at a backwoods boy like me and lose interest. They open their mouth and sound like one of those real housewives you see on TV and I’m immediately turned off. Fake and flashy.

But it’s different for Evie. Her little boyfriend isn’t like dumb city girl sluts who occasionally stroll in, he’s not someone you lose interest in. You don’t want to smack him and tell him to shut the fuck up every time he opens his mouth, even if it’s just to yawn. He’s what she could have had if she didn’t decide to stay here with me. I should’ve made her leave. But I was weak. My parents just died and I wasn’t ready to be alone. So when she offered to help me run the bar and take some time off from college, I jumped at her offer. I should have let her go.

But how do you let a girl like her go?

I need to be doing everything in my power to keep her. Even if it means letting her spread her legs. I mean wings. Wings is what I meant. But legs is what I was thinking.

Watching her tip her head back and laugh at Corey’s lame sense of humor, like she actually finds him funny, all I can see is her head tipping back and crying out in ecstasy as Brent goes down on her heavenly snatch. She’s bored here, not because our life is boring, but because she needs more. And I need to give it to her.

“I want to watch you fuck him,” I blurt out when she brushes against me on our way to the register.
