Three hours of shopping with Brady meant Kyla talking him out of about half a dozen dresses she could “totally pull off” but had zero interest in, including a beaded column gown and a feather-trim ruffle dress that only came in burnt orange. Kyla had nothing against wearing dresses, but her best friend had a taste for flair that she didn’t exactly share. Fortunately, the lapel tuxedo jumpsuit they’d settled on didn’t just come with pockets, but suited her body in ways that wouldn’t make her any more uncomfortable than she already knew she’d be tonight. It didn’t help that she’d had to drive over alone, since Avery’s mom had requested that she show up two hours earlier than intended.

Kyla’s hands tightened on the steering wheel of her car as she attempted to peer ahead of the slow-moving traffic before her. She’d only ever been to one, but the last five minutes had struck like a limo crawl to a red carpet. Except Avery had assured her that her mother’s party this year was nothing but a modest gathering at their townhouse on Cervantes—nothing as elaborate as previous years.

Avery’s voice echoed in her head. “There have been a few white tie events. Ballgowns, gloves, the whole thing. But…” She’d leaned in and stroked Kyla’s cheek, her garment bag draped over her arm in readiness to head out the door. “If this is the same kind of torture, please don’t feel like you need to do this for me. I’ve done this a million times, and knowing I’ll get to see you at the end of the night is more than enough to look forward to.”

Kyla could feel the brush of Avery’s lips even now, hear her own voice whisper, “I’ll be there.”

The mechanical tone of her GPS signaled that she’d arrived at her location, and she glanced right in search of the nickel gray Edwardian Avery had described. Still, it wasn’t until three more cars had moved up in the line of traffic ahead that she caught sight of the house. Two people dressed in standard white shirts, black vests and matching pants stood by the curb next to a sign that read valet parking. The taller blond moved toward Kyla’s Jeep the second it rolled to a stop. She gathered her phone and clutch as the valet stood by the side of her car, waiting.

“Good night, Ms. Logan.”

As she stepped out onto the curb with a mumbled acknowledgement and thoughtless exchange of her key, she was too occupied with thoughts of what lay within the looming structure in front of her to truly question how the valet knew her name. She crossed the sidewalk, removing herself from the path of other arrivals as she tapped out a quick message to Avery: I’m here. Her gaze roamed over her surroundings, distinguishing the guests by their evening dresses and designer tuxedos, from the gleam of their meticulously styled hair to the shoes on their feet. A light breeze rustled the row of well-tended trees lining the block.
