Organize by Time and Impact

The next chart is organized by time (x) and impact (y). Here, time horizons span one to two, two to three, three to five, or five to seven years and help us plot trends against the data we’ve collected in our earlier work. This chart can help us track trends and their potential impact as they emerge. It can also help track how they evolve and affect markets or behaviors over time. Remember, meaningful trends are rarely static; they’re usually in a state of motion. They’re either emerging, impacting, or waning. Their position on this or any chart we use will also shift depending on our intervals for revisiting trends (monthly, quarterly, annually).

For example, if we had the foresight to see the inevitable launch of the Apple iPhone in 2007, we could have planned for potential scenarios to accelerate change and innovation in how we work and how we sell.

In hindsight, there are important shifts and milestones that would have served as signals about big shifts in behaviors and market opportunities. Looking back, even as the iPhone launched, many industry leaders balked at its price and ridiculed it for missing a physical keyboard. But within just a few years, data usage on iPhones eclipsed voice usage, and it never looked back. Mobile Internet became dominant. Social media democratized information and influence. Mobile Internet consumption followed TV. AR/VR spawned hybrid applications, bridging physical and online spaces. The next big thing is already taking shape, so what will come, and what will happen next?
