Chapter twenty-seven

Jay

“And I kinda said”—Tyler covered his grin with both hands, fingers spread, his brown eyes wide and brows raised—“he could put it in any hole.”

Jay snorted his lemonade, and the lemony-lemonness burned his nose. Swallowing hard, he mashed his wrist to his nose and shut off that exit. “Fuck—” A cough took over his lungs and throat, long enough to make his eyes water.

“Should I smack your back?” Tyler half rose from their booth at The Cap & Feather and leaned over the table. “Do the emergency reach-around?”

The damn kid set him off again, a laugh spewing out like a hiccup and triggering another round of choking coughs. He flipped the bird.

“What?” Ty plunked his ass back down and splayed his hands in full who, me? innocence. His T-shirt, sporting the words In my defense, I was left unsupervised, undercut the effect hard. “Dude, I think you’ve got consumption. That’s like an old man disease, right?”

Double bird, flipped right in his fucking face as Jay mastered the lemon burn and straightened up from his hunch.

Tyler nudged Jay’s glass closer to him. “That’s a bad cough. You should sip something to clear it up.”

“One more, man. One more, and sibling rules are in effect.” Smartass punk. A guy turned thirty and suddenly the whole world was full of children. He’d crossed the maturity divide. Hopefully his nephews wouldn’t notice next weekend, or he’d lose his cool uncle cred. At least he’d defeated Ty on the court yesterday morning—with help from Claudia in one game and Daniel the next. He’d have to work on finding a sixth sub to join so they could go three on three. “If you think I can’t wrestle your scrawny ass to the floor and pin you, you’re gonna see how wrong you are.”

“Shit, you think I can get him to say that to me?” Elbows on the table, Ty propped his chin on his fists. “Not the sibling bit, ew, but that wrestling thing? Maybe with more menace in his voice. Gravelly. The voice that’s like belly-deep, and he—”

Jay waved his hands in a referee time out. “Back up. I get it, you met him twelve hours ago and your dick is writing him love letters already. But hold off on the fantasizing. What actually happened? Did you scene with him last night? What did you agree to?”

“I want to agree to everything. Like, literally everything.” Ty scraped his hands down his twenty-four-year-old baby face and groaned at the ceiling. “If he asked me to ride a unicycle with a grapefruit up my ass and a platypus suit on my head, I’d be like: I’ll be there in two minutes. I don’t even like grapefruit. I just want to try everything.”

He’d had days like those. The urgent need to please could still send him to his knees when Henry or Alice stood in front of him. Desire set his whole body quivering like the puppy Alice sometimes named him, her praise for his service the treat she dangled in her fingers.
