Sometimes students will understand more about grit if they learn about how others have displayed it. You might assign longer-term projects, which require some degree of persistence and tenacity. While students may sometimes be discouraged by these more difficult assignments, timing is critical. These projects are geared toward older students, who have demonstrated success with shorter-term projects. The following ideas for longer-term projects will help as well.

• Establish checkpoints to provide formative feedback to students and help them examine options for next steps.

• Identify or provide the materials and guidance needed.

• Practice with hypothetical projects prior to beginning actual community service initiatives.
