Superficial vs Deep Changes

You look like you’re going to spend your life having one epiphany after another, always thinking you’ve finally figured out what’s holding you back, and how you can finally be productive and creative and turn your life around. But nothing will ever change. That cycle of mediocrity isn’t due to some obstacle. It’s who you are.

~Black Hat Girl

Randall Munroe, XKCD 10127

A key benefit to embracing frustration is that if we don’t, it is easy to fall into the trap of tweaking code that should be rewritten. This is particularly true among those of us who read a lot of self-help books, seeking to apply what we learn quickly. Very often, we grow to like the feeling of changing, and are willing to change superficially so long as it is for the better. This is often a healthy attitude, as the low-hanging fruit of well-being – eating well, sleeping well, and exercising regularly – can for the most part be addressed by changing habits and do not require changing character. Character does change in response to habits once they are ingrained, but many of us neglect to bring the same kind of intentionality to changing our character as we bring to changing our habits. This is partly from a reasonable bias for quick results – supposedly it takes only a month to build a habit, so a positive change in character must take longer.
