Information Fluency
We live in an age of disposable information. While it retains value, it is simply more perishable now due to its sheer volume and ever-changing nature. Every day, we create 2.5 quintillion bytes of dataâso much that 90 percent of the data in the world today was created in the last two years alone (IBM, n.d.)! With so much transforming and multiplying data surrounding us, itâs increasingly difficult to claim absolute expertise on anything.
We must teach our students to be fluent with information. Thus, we present information fluency as the ability to mechanically and intuitively interpret information in all forms and formats in order to extract the essential knowledge, perceive its meaning and significance, and use it to complete real-world tasks. The information fluency process has five distinct aspects: (1) ask, (2) acquire, (3) analyze, (4) apply, and (5) assess. In this chapter, we will describe these aspects, note some of the skills each helps to cultivate, and list potential benefits that result from developing those skills. We then provide rubrics for measuring items that students require to be successful with information fluencyâs aspects.
