‘The Pampered Parisian Poodle Package is expensive, I know,’ sings Paulette, ‘but as you can see, it is worth every euro.’

I look around the parlour, but I can’t see Daisy. I see a pale-yellow poodle sitting beneath a hair dryer. I see a poodle covered in soap suds standing in a bath. I see a pale-blue poodle draped across the chaise longue.

‘Oh, look, Dad!’ I cry. ‘It’s one of those bushes, trimmed into the shape of a poodle.’

‘A topiary poodle,’ sings Dad. ‘How clever.’

‘Maaaa!’ bleats the topiary poodle. It bounces towards us, frolics around our legs, then headbutts the counter three times. DONK! DONK! DONK!

‘Daisy!’ squeals Nat.

Paulette pats the cover of a book that lies on the counter. It’s Topiary Inspiration. ‘The little lamb is transformed, yes?’ she asks.

We nod. Stunned.
