THEY WERE QUIET on the way home, each lost in thought. Darcy pulled around the far side of the stables and parked his truck in his usual spot. For a moment they sat there, looking out at the night sky. Silver peeked at him from under her lashes, his last comment still vibrating in her mind. If he only knew how much she wanted to take Loretta’s advice. Of course, if she did…She shivered.

Darcy looked over. “Cold?”

“No, not really.”

“The air can get cool at night, even in the middle of summer.”

“A goose must have walked over my grave—that’s what my Granny Braybourne would have said.”

“A goose? Why a goose?”

“I haven’t the faintest idea. Granny used to twist the English language to suit her own purposes.” As she met his amused gaze, she shivered again. His eyes were so compelling, they urged her to drop her barriers, to go for the moment. Those eyes were pure temptation.

“You’re getting chilled.” He moved over and wrapped his arm around her shoulder, one hand rubbing up and down her arm to create some friction. “You’re one big goose bump.”

“I’m fine, really,” she said, her voice faint as the scent of his aftershave teased her nostrils. “You don’t need to—”

“I know.”

“It’s still pretty hot outside. I’ll warm up in a minute. It was the breeze from the windows when we were driving, th-tha—” she stumbled as her eyes looked deep into his “—that’s all.”

He lifted a brow, his eyes even more intent as they remained locked on hers. “Uh-huh, sure it was.”

“It was.”

His gaze swept over her. “Not the fact that my handkerchief could cover more of you than that dress does?”

“This dress is perfectly warm. Perfectly acceptable.” When his eyes came back to hers, the tension grew until it was almost palpable in the soft summer night. The fingertips of his right hand continued to stroke her arm. If she closed her eyes right now, she thought, she could see them making love.

“Oh,” he practically choked out, “that dress is more than acceptable. It damn near brought me to my knees when you stepped onto the porch.” He lifted his other hand, fingering the straps that crossed behind her neck.

“Good.” She knew she was playing with fire, but wasn’t she a risk taker by nature, even when she knew it was insane?

His hand slid down from her neckline, skimming lightly over her breast to grasp her waist. “Is that why you wore it? To make me beg?”

“Are you begging?” One step closer to the flame.

“You’d better believe it.”

“Then I’ll have to thank the saleswoman who sold it to me.”

“So will I.”

Leaning forward, Silver whispered, “She said it would make a man crawl.” Lord, it was hot. Her blood was beginning to boil.

Darcy moved closer until she could feel him along the length of her as they sat on the bench seat. “She was right. I’m lower than a snake’s belly right about now. I have to make love to you, Silver. I know I shouldn’t.
