Healing Continued

The detectives weren’t getting any information from the detainee. Butt Munch requested an attorney immediately and refused to give anything other than a series of fake names and countries of origin. After an hour with the officers, they had nothing of substance. Mildred and David rose to leave as Butt Munch claimed to be Truman Capote, New York, New York, and the last they heard he was St. Bernard from Clair Vaux, France. He was a smug ass that seemed to have an education or at least had read some books.

They drove away initially in silence. Mildred felt exhausted, when David finally spoke. “Mom, I’m confused, whatever convinced you to take a job like this? You are in your seventies.”

“Early seventies, David. I consider it more like late sixties. The why doesn’t matter, let’s just say finances.”

“But you have the two pensions and social security?”

“Not anymore, the pensions were used to pay off a debt. Period. End of discussion.”

“I can help. You don’t have to do this.”

Mildred tried again to muffle the conversation. “I wouldn’t ask my sons while I can still take care of myself, and I do that just fine.”

“Obviously not so fine today,” said David. Her laugh was hollow, and then she moaned. The trip continued in silence, Mildred was feeling defensive, and it was obvious that her son had more questions.

Once home, the silence continued. David helped settle his mother into her chair with a blanket and a cup of tea. He retreated to the kitchen to attack dinner.

The decision was made to utilize the moment alone, and Mildred took Penny Dumple’s business card from the fanny pack still near her chair. Worry about her new friend had nagged her ever since the fiasco began. Once dialed, there was no turning back and the familiar voice answered.

“Hi, Penny, this is Oliver. I wanted to check to be sure you escaped the drama at the casino.”

“Oliver, I was worried about you, too. I was moved to the nightclub not long after you left. I hoped you got out before the lockdown. Do you want to get together for a drink?”

“I would love to, but I’m not in socializing condition.”

“I can come over. Do you need anything? I’m free this evening.”

Mildred had to smile about her new friend, but Penny didn’t know the truth about Oliver. “Maybe in a couple of days; my son is visiting, and I have something else to tell you before we meet again.”

“Oh, Oliver, don’t worry. I know.” Penny teased.

“Penny, Penny, how could you know anything about me?”

“Honey, I’m a cross-dresser too, and you were easy to spot.”

Mildred was stunned. “What gave me away?”

“The voice, always the voice, and you are pretty small in those big floppy shoes. I can come over, and we could work on it.”

“You can call me Mildred, and your alternative name is…”

“Tim.”

“So I have to go for now, Tim, but I’ll call again, soon.”

“Sweet dreams, Mildred.”

David came around the corner. “Tim? Is he a boyfriend or a murderer you know?”

“Boyfriend? At my age, the term is laughable.
