When I opened my eyes, I didn’t know if I should be laughing or crying. The latest scene with Gram and Irma was absurd. I didn’t know what to believe, and neither did Kasey viewing the expression on his face.

“I don’t think Irma’s as crazy as she’s letting on,” Kasey said.

I laughed. “She’s nuts, but not stupid.”

“Never was,” Rory said, standing by the fireplace. “What did you guys see? Is Graham okay? Is there any change in Reed’s condition?”

I nodded. “Dr. Marsh told Graham that there'd been a drastic improvement. I don’t see how that’s possible.”

“It’s not,” Kasey said, with a sharp tongue. “Reed’s body’s decayed. His spirit’s here and in possession of the ancestors. There’s nothing keeping his body alive but those machines.”

“That’s what the doctor told him before,” I said, meeting eyes with Kasey. “Why did he call Graham and tell him that there’d been a change?”

“I don’t know,” Kasey said. “It concerns me.”

I gazed at Rory highly concerned. “The ancestors would never have let him go. If there is any improvement, it could just be the ancestors trying to use Reed’s soul and body as an outlet to return to the mortal realm. Whatever’s happening, I guarantee that it has nothing to do with Reed.”

“I have to agree. Even the slightest possibility of that is terrifying,” Kasey said.

Rory bowed his head and rubbed his forehead. He looked up, and his eyes shifted back and forth between us.

“This is the work of the ancestors. They’ve gained power because they have Reed’s soul. I’m afraid they’ve reached out to the mortal realm somehow. They need to be stopped before it’s too late.”
