Before Dakota knew it, the morning of the court appearance dawned. Between Skye and Ryker, her week had been packed. Her nerves were shot, and she wanted to vomit.

Ryker hadn’t stayed over last night. He had wanted to, but she’d told him she was exhausted and needed to sleep alone. Since Saturday night, he had been there every night, sleeping by her side in bed, holding her through the night, and showing her just how much pleasure her body was capable of experiencing.

Their relationship had gone from zero to sixty overnight. Dakota loved feeling him beside her, feeling his warmth surround her, and those impossibly strong arms that knew just how to hold her.

But she had needed last night to work through her fears and just be by herself without him crowding her.

Even with everything he had done for her, even though she had agreed to be his submissive, she had needed the time alone to get herself organized and centered before the proceedings.

She knew Brian—or she had, at one point.

And she had to work out all the possible scenarios over why he was making a case and deciding he wanted to step into the role of Skye’s father. She agonized over it for most of the night, tossing and turning, cursing herself for sending Ryker away. Because she might have gotten some sleep if he had been there.

How had she come to depend on him so completely in such a short span of time?

It should be worrisome, the swiftness of her need to lean on him and turn to him for everything.

But she didn’t have the energy to worry about that now. She mainlined coffee and got Skye ready for daycare. By the time she arrived at the court house for the first mediation, her nerves were going haywire, and all the coffee she had imbibed churned in her belly.

Where was he?

She stood near the courtroom hickory wood door, refusing to pace her anxiety away. She clamped her hands together, glancing down the hall with its gray carpeting and tan walls. There were brown wooden benches outside each door for people to sit and wait. But she was too anxious to sit. As people entered the hallway, she searched for the man who always stood out above the rest. It wasn’t just his height, either. Ryker had this commanding, charismatic presence that electrified the space he was in.

Although, perhaps it was more what his presence did to her.

Dakota spotted Brian approaching in a tailored navy suit, with a petite, gorgeous blonde in a butternut-colored dress on his arm. Beside the handsome couple was a distinguished gentleman in a black pinstripe suit, his dark temples peppered with gray threads. Brian lifted a brow as they passed, smirking at finding her alone.

Damn him.

How could she have ever thought herself in love with him? It was beyond her comprehension when she looked at the smarmy prick now. The sex had been decent, even though it had been on the vanilla side of the aisle.
