The screams turned into full-blown cries of terror. I made it out of the basement and ran down the hallway toward the cries. My heart was pounding. My breathing, heavy. Flashbacks of chasing Luna down this same hallway entered my mind.

Her cries became closer as I ran towards the kitchen. I could hear Mom shouting now.

“Stop it, Luna! Stop it!” Mom shouted.

Luna?

When I turned the corner of the hallway, I saw her. Livy was in Mom’s arms, crying hysterically as tears poured from her eyes. At Mom’s feet was Pogo, Clownface, Bunny, Froggy, and Annie, all of Livy’s new toys scattered on the ground.

Luna was shaking her head aggressively under the table. Violently. There was something in her mouth.

“Luna,” Dad shouted. “What has gotten into you?!”

She was growling loudly, shaking her head back and forth as something hit the ground.

A cowboy hat.

Dad reached down under the table and grabbed Luna by the back of the neck and lifted her into the air. She hung there in his arms, her front two paws still bandaged, which she paid it no mind.

“Let go!” he shouted as he reached for her mouth.

Luna’s growl… it was the same sound I heard in my nightmare. It was different even from when she growled at that Annie doll in the window. She stopped shaking her head when Dad grabbed her, but she didn’t stop growling. She was relentless. Angry. Dad retrieved what was in her mouth.

“Luna…”

It was the Cowboy Bear. One of the dolls from the toybox. Its checkered jacket had two huge gash marks running diagonally across the front. White cotton protruded from holes in its face, arms, legs, and body.

Olivia buried her head in Mom’s shoulder as she continued to cry. Tiny cotton balls floated around the kitchen.

“We’re going outside,” Dad said as he placed his other hand on Luna’s belly while still gripping her neck. Dad marched her to the front of the house as I stared at what was left of the Cowboy Bear. Mom held Livy, gently shushing her to stop crying as she bounced her in her arms.

“What happened?” I asked.

“I don’t know,” Mom said. You could tell she was holding back tears, probably not trying to scare Olivia. “Livy came in here with all these…” She looked down at the ground and paused. “…dolls. And when Luna saw her, she just freaked out.”

“What do you mean she freaked out? Did she bite Livy?” I asked.

“No. I mean, I don’t think so.” Mom looked over Olivia for a few seconds, examining her arms and face, before continuing. “She ran and snatched that toy out of Olivia’s hand and just went crazy.” She nodded towards the Cowboy Bear.

“I want Pogo, Momma,” Olivia shouted in protest, her voice still ripe with fear.

I picked Pogo up off the ground. “Here you go, Livy. It’s okay. You’re okay.”

I know she didn’t mean anything by it, but she grabbed Pogo out of my hand quickly and pulled him in tight burying her head back into Mom’s shoulder.
