Mathis dialed. John picked up on the first ring. “You’re not going to believe this.”

“Not going to believe what?” Mathis turned as the microwave dinged. “You found your grandfather?”

“Not exactly. My mother’s mother disappeared for a summer when she was eighteen. She was on a road trip with friends after high school graduation. One morning they woke up and she was gone. No note, nothing. There was a search as well as several newspaper articles. After a month, the search died down because there were no leads, nothing for the police to follow. Her parents hired a private investigator but by then the trail was cold.”

All the fine hairs were standing at the nape of his neck. “When did she show up?”

“Six months later they found her on the beach. Naked and pregnant.”

“Where?” His heart was pounding.

“About a mile from the place where she disappeared.” John swallowed. “That was several years before the Moss’s bought the land. What does this mean?”

He had to tell Sam and Damien. Now. To hell with the party, this couldn’t wait. “Thanks, John, I’ll handle it.”

He hung up and ignoring the food, headed to the bedroom. News like this was sure to send Sam into a tailspin. He should at least try to show up in decent dress so he didn’t embarrass—

Movement in the corner of his eye. Mathis whirled, his teeth bared, claws shooting out.

The dart caught him in the arm and he crashed to the floor.
