Chapter 32

Saturday

Nate wasn’t up until after 9am Monday morning, sleeping in after getting up early and working late last night. The stout had done well, drawing a larger crowd than usual and bringing in some much needed revenue. Instead of brewing, he’d spent his time helping out up front.

Rubbing his eyes, he looked over at Andrea who was zonked out on the other side of the bed, a small line of drool coming out of her mouth and onto the pillow. It didn’t make her look any less beautiful.

Grinning, he went through his ablutions and took a quick shower downstairs, so as not to wake her. Then he got started on breakfast, making banana bread with some overripe bananas and the rest of a small package of crushed walnuts.

By the time she emerged, the quiche in the oven was almost done. He wasn’t able to find the frozen crusts he usually kept in there, forcing him to make the crust from scratch.

It wasn’t hard, but it also wasn’t his favorite thing to do before having at least three cups of coffee in him.

Picking up the coffee carafe, he set it on the counter. Quickly followed by a pint of organic coffee creamer and a bowl of sugar.

She took a sip, easing her way into the waking world. “You ready for today?”

He flipped the bacon just as the timer on the oven went off. The second oven with the quiche still had ten minutes to go.

He pulled out the banana bread, setting it on a rack.

Andrea leaned forward to sniff. “Yum. When did you have time to make this?”

He glanced at the clock on the microwave. “Ninety minutes ago, more or less. I’ve been up for a while, so I started cooking. I figured you’d want to sleep in.”

She set her coffee cup down, clearing her throat. “Can I ask you a question?”

He tested the banana bread with a knife. It came out clean. “Sure.”

She waited until he was looking at her again. “Where do you see us going? In the future, I mean?”

His mind froze up, despite the slightly burning bacon in the pan. “Well, let me think about it. I see you moving in.” He glanced up, confirming that answer wasn’t satisfactory.

He pressed on. “And I see us living together for a while. And, when the time is right, I can see myself proposing to you. Maybe at one of your fancy restaurants, or maybe on a quiet walk around the city. Or maybe at the opening of our very own restaurant.”

The thing was, he could see all those scenarios. He wasn’t just half-assing it here. “Where do you think the two of us are going?”

She smiled, but it was tinged with sadness, he thought.

“I see those things, too. But I…” She shook her head.

“What?”

She straightened up, meeting his eyes. “I want us to choose our path, instead of falling into it through inertia. Not to put too fine a point on it, but I think that’s what happened with your last marriage.
