A Christmas Gift for All

“What a beautiful night it is,” sang ten year old, Hillary. “The Christmas bells are ringing, the children are waiting to see what Santa is bringing.”

“What a beautiful song,” said Mother, walking by Hillary’s bedroom.

“Thank you,” said Hillary. “I wrote it.”

“You did!” exclaimed Mother, almost dropping the basket of laundry she was carrying. “Wow Hillary. That is beautiful!”

“Thank you Mom,” said Hillary. “I am going to sing it at the school Christmas concert.”

“Oh that would be so beautiful,” said Mom.

The night of the school Christmas concert arrived and Hillary was not even the least bit nervous. She was practicing her song when her teacher, Mrs. Franklin, called her to the stage.

“We have a special surprise for everyone,” said Mrs. Franklin. “Hillary is going to sing us a song that she wrote herself. Come on out onto the stage, Hillary.”

Everyone clapped their hands when Hillary came out. Hillary sang her song and when she was finished everyone gave her a standing ovation.

“She wrote that song herself?” asked an elderly woman sitting beside Hillary’s parents.

“Yes,” said Hillary’s Mom. “She did.”

“How old is she?” asked the elderly woman.

“She is ten years old,” said Mom, proudly.

“If only more children were writing songs and singing at her age,” said the elderly woman. “There would be much more love in our world.”

“You are so right,” said Mom.

“A Christmas Carol for all,” said the elderly woman.

The next morning, Mrs. Franklin stopped by Hillary’s house to talk with her parents.

“Hillary sure did a wonderful job on that song she sang,” said Mrs. Franklin. “Everyone was amazed that she wrote it herself. In fact, she impressed Mrs. Jenkins.”

“Mrs. Jenkins?” asked Dad.

“Yes,” said Mrs. Franklin. “She was sitting beside you and your wife in the audience at the concert yesterday. She was so impressed by the fact that Hillary wrote that song herself that she is sponsoring a new program for children who have an interest in music. The program is called ‘A Christmas Carol for All.’”

“That is wonderful,” said Dad.

“The program is going to allow children of all ages to learn music,” said Mrs. Franklin.

“That is quite an honorable thing that Mrs. Jenkins did,” said Mom. “I can’t believe it.”

“It is,” said Mrs. Franklin. “It is going to give so many children like Hillary the equipment and resources to create the music they should be creating.”

Hillary was thrilled when she learned that Mrs. Jenkins had sponsored the program. She accelerated in the program as did several other children. The music they created was performed at school concerts and everyone adored them.

“Mrs. Jenkins,” said Mom, one evening at one of the school concerts. “It was such a nice thing for you to do for the students.”

“Oh,” said Mrs. Jenkins. “It was nothing and besides it was your daughter Hillary that inspired me to sponsor this program.”

“Well,” said Mom. “We truly appreciate what you have done.”

“And,” said Mrs. Jenkins. “I truly appreciate the music these children have created.”
