Chapter TWELVE

BY THE time I reached the Council, I had calmed down enough to control my transformation. Some kind of switch had been revealed inside of me, and now that I knew its location, I could turn it on and off whenever I wanted to. I had spent my life hiding my nightly dragon journeys when I could have had power over my own body the whole time.

I transformed back into my human body in the clearing in the woods near the library. The change was quicker, simpler, and more comfortable because my body had embraced the change. I found a spare pair of my old clothes I’d left behind the rock and, after I dressed, set out to find Josiah, or at least his powerful book.

Even though I was back in human form, the anger about my mother’s death still burned inside of me like an oil lamp always refilled. And it wasn’t just my mother’s death that kept me furious, though that was a huge part of my anger—it was Lup and the other Animal Guards too. What if I wanted to embrace the old magic inside of me? Would they and the other wizards shoot me down like they had my mother?

Josiah was not in the library when I reached the shed, but the book was. Considering it was the only book on the shelf, it was not hard to find. The spine lay flat against the shelf and the pages were open, as though someone had been pacing and set it down midread.

I moved the book to the table and sat down in Josiah’s chair.

“Come on,” I said to the blank page. “Show me something.”

Still blank.

“Did she send you to fetch like a good dragon?” Josiah’s voice whispered from behind me.

Startled, I closed the book with a loud clap. Clutching it to my chest, I prepared to transform at the slightest hint of danger.

“It’s okay, boy,” Josiah said as he sat down next to me. He looked even older than the last time I had seen him, if that was even possible. “If the book is what you seek, then take it. You’re the next Librarian, after all; it’s your right. But I warn you, if you approach the book the way you are now, it will never show you anything.”

Slowly I laid the book back on the table, watching Josiah out of the corner of my eye for any sudden movements.

“Then show me how to read it.”

Josiah let out a long sigh, and the air smelled like stale, moldy bread and chamomile.

“It’s not that simple. The book reads your body, or more accurately, your brain. It finds the little place where you keep all of your intentions, and it shuffles through them like a deck of cards. If the book doesn’t like what it finds there, it goes blank. Don’t you think the sorceresses would have tried to steal such a powerful object from me before now if they thought they could read it?
