“I will drive her home after we’ve had supper,” Jesse said. His

composed voice was not one to be refuted.

But Kyle Weston wasn’t the sharpest tool in the box—or perhaps

he was just purposely ignorant or malicious. Clayton didn’t care about

the reason behind his actions. All he wanted was for the man to leave

this place where he’d found peace for the first time in his rowdy,

Getting up from the couch, his hands fisting by his side, Clayton

felt like the tenuous, fragile balance of his life was quickly becoming

strenuous and paper-thin, about to break and shatter into a billion

pieces, beyond repair.

“Clay, don’t.” Shelly had gotten up, too, and held onto his hand,

forcing his fist to unclench with her petite fingers. What steadfast

strength hid in that delicate grip Clayton had not even imagined

before, but now under that hold he found himself unable to move,

fight or run.

“Hey, Shelly? You in there?” Kyle shouted from the door,

apparently having heard her voice but not her words.

“Kyle, go home. I’ll come back late, okay?” Shelly’s conciliatory

tone would probably have worked—on anyone else except for her

thick-headed brother.

“Oh, come on, darling. If you want to hang out with Jesse one on

one, just say so, and I’ll—” Kyle’s voice cut off when he peered

above Jesse’s shoulder and caught a glimpse of Clayton. “What in the

holy hell! ” He attempted to storm past Jesse into the house, but trying

to move Jesse was as impossible as shifting a giant-sized boulder with

a pinky. “Get the hell out of my way, Jess!” Kyle yelled, pushing the

man’s chest—with zero effect. “What the fuck is that asshole doing

with you, Shelly? Let her out, Jesse, or by God—”

“Oh, shut up, you selfish idiot,” Shelly interjected, frustrated, her

voice sharp. “What would you know about God when you beat up a
