Work Flexibility

A key factor that allowed many of the sons in this study to participate actively in caring for their ill parent was the amount of control and flexibility they had over their work hours. Sons who were business executives, salesmen, artists, professors, and blue-collar workers with seniority, having some control over their work schedules, used this flexibility to their advantage. The sons who did not have that built-in advantage experienced more caregiver stress.

A 46-year-old son, helping a mother care for a sick father, said this about his situation with an already hectic work schedule:

The burden of our lifestyles is already pretty bad on a good day I mean you are running for an airplane at 6:30 in the morning; you’ve been in three different cities and two different time zones. And you do that three or four times a week and on weekends. It’snota great lifestyle on a good day, and then to have this overlay of emotion-laden tragedy that’s playing out; that takes an additional burden, toll on your time and strength.

Another son heads a family-owned corporation. He spoke of the advantages his job flexibility gives him while attempting to deal with his father’s medical problems:

I mean, I would have to take weeks off to resolve this. Where in my position I don’t have to worry about that because I am covered but I can see where this [control over your hours] would be a necessity because there’s no way you can run a job and deal with this at times.

Over half of the sons in this study helping to care for a parent with dementia had some flexibility in choosing the hours they worked.
