Quick summary In this slide, we’ll work to remember 12 NSAIDs. To do this, we divide the material into three mnemonics: PAINN spelled with two Ns; MEDS, short for medicines; and KICK, like ‘kick the ball;’ as well as “I-N, IN” to: 1) make it a sentence, and 2) remind us of ketorolac’s injectable form.

Mnemonic Part 1. PAINN.

P, prostaglandin, is a hormone-like compound responsible for blood clotting, labor induction, and contracting and relaxing muscles and blood vessels. Prostaglandins release in response to inflammation to cause pain and fever. NSAIDs reverse this and help with arthritis, gout, and headache. Think “A-G-H, AGH,” as in “AGH,” my…

A, arthritis, G, gout, and H, headache hurt—pain.

The next four drugs represented by A-I-N-N, AINN stands for NSAIDs in order of dosing frequency.

A, aspirin’s acronym, “A-S-A,” comes from the chemical name: Acetylsalicylic Acid, takes “A” from acetyl, “S” from salicylic, and “A” from acid. The brand Ecotrin is enteric-coated aspirin, taking the “e” from “enteric,” the c-o and t from “coated,” and the r-i-n from “aspirin” to make Ecotrin.

I, ibuprofen, and naproxen both end with “e-n,” and that’s a good way to remember they are two NSAIDs. However, many drugs end with “e-n.” That trick won’t help in a comprehensive multiple-choice exam. A better mnemonic tool is to notice that “profen, p-r-o-f-e-n” from ibuprofen is a recognized stem and differs from “proxen, p-r-o-x-e-n” in naproxen by only one letter.
