“U rban legends are weird,” Sophia said, setting her phone down to stir a packet of sugar into her coffee. “Most of the theories behind their origin don’t even make sense.”

“Like how a movie brought them to life makes sense?” Carson shifted to stretch his legs across his booth seat. He took a cautious sip of his own steaming coffee and was pleased to find it the perfect temperature, the kind of hot that is on the cusp of painful but holds wonderful heat. Sophia hadn’t lied. This was a damn fine cup of coffee.

“All right, you got me there. I guess it doesn’t matter now where they came from. We know we have to kill them all or we’ll end up dead. And, we know how to kill them.”

“Sounds overwhelming,” Carson sighed.

“Hey, if those dipshits Jenny and Randy can do it, then so can we.”

“You mean the fictional characters Jenny and Randy? And Randy died.”

“He didn’t have to.” Sophia was grinning, that devious look gracing the normally soft features of her face. She may have lost some of her mojo at the hotel with Isaac, but Carson could tell a part of her held excitement. She looked bound and determined to get some joy out of this, even if she had to steal it from the charred remains of melon heads. Yet, the oddest part was that she didn’t seem aware she was even doing it.

“What’s up with you?” Carson asked.

The grin faltered, faded. “What the hell are you talking about? What do you think is up with me? We’re being chased by monsters that shouldn’t exist.”

He waved a hand at her. “No, that’s not what I meant. That little smile just a moment ago. It was the same as back at the house, after we fended them off the first time. Like you were having fun.”

“Oh, I was?” She looked down into her mug, shrugged. “Well, you know.”

“No, I don’t—”

The waitress returned with their food. An omelet for Sophia and a couple eggs over easy, shredded hash browns, and a side of bacon for Carson. They nodded their thanks and waited approximately one half second before tearing into the food.

Carson broke the eggs over the potatoes and scarfed a few bites. Around a fresh fork-full, he said, “Come on. What’s going on? I want to know.”

Sophia swallowed. “What if I don’t want to say?”

Carson held both hands up, the one with the fork flinging a bit of egg. “All right. That’s fine. I’m not trying to force anything out of you that you’re not comfortable sharing.”

“No, you’re right. I’m just so used to deflecting all the time. But, you and I, we used to tell each other everything, didn’t we?”

“I know I did.”

“Yeah, I guess I kind of forgot what that was like.”

Carson waited a beat, then said, “It has to do with Rae and whatever you didn’t tell me earlier, right?”

“No! No, everything’s fine with Rae.” She cleared her throat. “Okay. . . I don’t know. We’re just both so busy all the time.
