Sesuland languished under a moonless night sky, the air still warm from the day’s heat. In the villages surrounding the grand city of Selike, the people settled in for the night, gathering about the scattered fires to talk of the day and hear stories passed down from elders to children. Behind the city walls, the time for rest came much later. Sesuland had prospered much over the last twenty years. It was still not the great city its founder Dingane had envisioned, but it was the largest city in the grasslands and the center of one of the most powerful kingdoms of the Sudan.

Three men made their way to the outskirts of Selike that night. They moved cautiously, traveling through the grass instead of the roads. They carried no shields or assegais, but the slap of leather scabbards against their thighs warned of their intent. They advanced quickly, covering the miles in short time, moving between farms and villages unnoticed, continuing until they could see the outline of the watchtowers of the city, their perpetual lights burning like ever-observant eyes. The men finally rested, two squatting in the high grass, one standing to full height as he stared at his former home.

If Ndoro had been alone he would have wept. The emotions in him were stronger than he expected. The memories of his life in the city flooded his mind; the years living as a royal outcast, the tainted son of Dingane. Images of his mother resurfaced and he felt shame for not returning sooner. He should have come for her sooner. She would have enjoyed the status of Shumba’s mother, not the humiliation of being Dingane’s lesser wife. The thought brought back the anger that fuelled his every step since the night he was driven from Selike twenty years ago.

Jawanza stood beside him. “It is a beautiful city.”

“Yes, it is,” Ndoro replied.

Nakisisa joined them in his human form. “Do you have many enemies there, Shumba?”

Ndoro turned to the river spirit, reading his grim intent. “Yes, I do.”

Nakisisa smiled hungrily.

Ndoro knelt and opened the traveling pouch strapped to his side, extracting the red warrior robes of Sesuland. He discarded his Diaka garments and donned the robes of his former home.

“If I have not returned by morning, do not hesitate to attack, Jawanza. Selike must burn.”

Jawanza scowled. “I still advise against this, Shumba. If you are discovered and killed, all that you built will shatter like shells against stone.”

“All we have achieved has been for this moment,” Ndoro replied. “I am back to claim what is mine, what my father meant for me to have. I will not be denied!”

Ndoro cursed himself for the anger. He managed to smile, placing his hand on Jawanza’s shoulders.

“I must do this, my brother. It is what I’ve lived for.”

Ndoro trotted to the main road, leaving his companions in their hiding place as he set of at a warrior’s pace. After a half an hour, he stood before the gates of the outer wall. He hesitated, realizing that once he stepped into Selike, he would be stepping into his past.
