AS I HUNG up the phone and went toward the alley where I’d left the car, I thought about calling Ramón. I’d awakened with a desperate longing for Teresa-Maria—to feel her against me, hold her, smell her, retrace the geography of her breasts. The Lee Street of my mind basted in its despair. There was nothing more I could do, nowhere to go. I was stranded halfway between the past and the future.

“Where’s the meeting A.J. went to?” I asked Martha as soon as she opened the office door.

“Downstairs in the legal department.” She looked at the attaché case in my hand.

“I’m going to change clothes.”

“Be my guest.”

I went back into the green room where Medina gazed tilt-lidded from the wall, her motives veiled but her heart avid. Opening the case, I took out my pants and peeled off the turtleneck. As I buttoned last night’s shirt, something tickled my throat. Craning sideways, I peered down at my collar. There, woven accidently into the oxford cloth, lay a long wavy hair the copper of a Levi’s rivet.
