Zimbabwe’s Celebratory Day

Pulsing through the air of Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, is the jubilant excitement of a celebration about to begin. One and all are invited to the soccer stadium for the sixth anniversary of independence declared on April 18, 1980, following 90 years of British colonial rule and a period of renegade white segregationist rule. Robert Mugabe is president. Amid police sirens, a VIP visitor—Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman Yasser Arafat—is escorted through town. On the soccer field, two Zimbabwean brothers invite me to climb the stadium steps. High above the field, I sit, yell, laugh, and cheer with them for the independence that was so long in the coming.
