THE BIRTH OF PEGASUS

Often overlooked in the story of Perseus is the striking and strange births that occur. One of these births is a particular creature that has also frequented legends, myths, and modern day retellings: the flying horse Pegasus. As Perseus delivers Medusa’s deathblow, Pegasus and his rider Chrysaor spring from her severed neck. Some stories differ on this depiction, however, and say that Pegasus and Chrysaor sprout from the Gorgon’s blood that had fallen to the ground. In either case, it is revealed that Medusa is pregnant with the horse and rider. Apparently carrying the children since her encounter with Poseidon, they have stayed captive inside her until Perseus cuts her open, and they finally come flying out of her throat.
