What to do if your friend is involved in bullying? In general, students reported that they would be âVery Likelyâ or âLikelyâ to defend victims of online bullying (See Table 10.2). However, further analyses revealed differences between the reported possible reaction for friends (presumably socially closer) and for classmates (presumably less close than a friend). They were more willing to write an online comment to defend their friend if they saw their friendâs picture posted on a page with a mean caption (Mean = 1.66, SD = .92, n = 59), compared to if they saw a photograph of a classmate posted with the same mean caption (Mean = 2.24, SD = .1.12, n = 59) (t = 3.59, df = 58, p < .01). Students also reported that they would be more likely to defend their best friend when the latter received an aggressive online comment from a classmate (Mean = 1.47, SD = .72, n = 55), rather than in the scenario where their best friend perpetrated bullying against a classmate (Mean = 2.42, SD = .94, n = 55) (t = 7.09, df = 54, p < .001). In other words, studentsâ responses suggested the role of social distance in their likelihood to intervene in online bullying incident: they would be more willing to stand up if the victim were a friend than a classmate. On the contrary, however, students would be less willing to intervene if a friend was the one who committed online bullying than if the perpetrator were a classmate. These patterns appeared across gender. That is, boys and girls were both more willing to defend their friends than stand up for their classmates, and were less likely to intervene if the bully happened to be their friend.
Table 10.2 Students would be more likely to defend their friend than defend classmate.
