Only he could be so cavalier about something so serious. She put her hands on her hips.

“Why do that?”

“Because I wanted you to believe me.” He rolled his hands forward. His chest muscles clenched, catching her eye again.

She dropped her hands from her waist. Her stomach tensed, along with things down low.

“Why do that?” He'd put himself in danger for her, simply to get her to believe his story? Being classified as “officially” dead by Union Alliance meant that he could be arrested and charged with impersonation. It limited anything that could be done for him if he were caught. If she knew Union Alliance higher-ups, they would let him fry rather than risk revelations they'd ever sanctioned assassination, even though they had. Despite the fact that everyone knew they had.

“I told you why. For you.” His voice deepened. Sounded rougher than it had been since they'd started talking.

She shook her head. “You never should have done this. Gone to such lengths to see me.”

She couldn't help a tingle along her spine. Never had she imagined anyone doing such a thing. It spoke volumes about what he wanted.

Me.

“I left you to protect you.”

“I'm starting to realize that.” She sighed. To make a life with her, he would have had to pull out of Union Alliance, and that wouldn't have been easy as quickly as they had mated. To get out now had to have required months of planning. “Does Larkin know any of this?”

“No.” Colton's smile was rueful. “I figured you needed to be the first to know what I was.”

His chest rose and fell through his open shirt. “I met him when I was on my way to see you a few weeks ago. I saw it as a sign.”

She ripped her gaze away from his pecs. His muscles didn't look like they'd give a millimeter. From what she remembered, they hadn't. “He didn't know about me either until you told him?”

“Right. I wiped away all official knowledge of our mating from public records. It isn't even listed in Zelda's database, so it was a surprise to her too. I didn't do anything to connect us. I did all that to keep you safe.”
